“Have you ever felt confused while using words?”. If so here is a topic which does the same. But don't worry guys we can make it clear. The topic is "Homonyms and Homophones". Come on let us dive into the topic to get a clear view.

Homonyms:



Homo+nyms

Homo - same.

nyms - name.



Homonyms are the words which have same spelling and same pronunciation but different meaning (i.e),same word having different meaning.

Here are few examples to get a clear understanding:

1) Mouse - an animal/another word for rat.

    Eg: The cat chased the mouse.

    Mouse - a computer’s input device.

    Eg: A Computer’s mouse allows users to select objects on the screen.

2) Fan -  an electric device.

    Eg: My brother turned on the fan.

    Fan – a person who admires someone/something.

    Eg:  I am a fan of Vijay.

3) Fly – an insect.

    Eg: The Fly was buzzing around the cake.

    Fly – to move in air.

    Eg: The bird with broken wings couldn’t fly.


Homophones:

Homo+phones

Homo - same.

phones - sound.

Homophones are the words which have same pronunciation but different spelling and different meaning.

Here are few examples to get a clear understanding:

1)  Heal/Heel:

     Heal – to recover/cure.

     Eg: Scientists have not discovered medicine to heal this disease.

     Heel – lower part of leg.

     Eg: He wore shoes to save his heel from allergy.

 2) Earn/Yearn:

     Earn – procure/gain something.

     Eg: He earns 2 lakhs per annum.

     Yearn – a strong desire.

     Eg: The old man yearn for love and affection.

3) Knew/New:

    Knew – aware of something.

    Eg: They knew about the pandemic situation.

    New – recent/current beginning.

    Eg: They started a new company.
