Clipped and Blended Words

Learning will always help everyone to do great things. Learning can be done according to one's interest. So, never stop learning. Here are two topics which seems to be similar but are different. The topics are "Clipped words" and "Blended Words".

1. Clipped Words are words in which the entire word is reduced to one of its parts. Here are few day-to-day examples to make you clear.

Eg: Telephone - phone.

     Here the entire word is - telephone.

                  clipped word is - phone.

In the above example the entire word "Telephone" is clipped to a single word "Phone" which is one of the parts in telephone. (Telephone). Look into few more examples to get a clear idea.

Few more examples:

1.Refrigerator - Fridge.

2.Mathematics - Math.

3.Laboratory - Lab.

4.Examination - Exam.

5.Spectacles - Specs.

2. Blended Words are formed by merging/blending two words to get a single word. Here is the example.

Eg: Smoke + fog ----> Smog.

Here the two words "smoke" and "fog" are combined to get a single word "smog" which is the blended word.

Few more examples:

1.Breakfast + lunch ----> Brunch.

2.Motor + hotel -----> Motel.

3.Information + entertainment -----> Infotainment.

4.Television + broadcast -----> Telecast.

5.International + network -----> Internet.

Everyone would have used the above words frequently without knowing it as a blended word/clipped word. Right from now on know the concepts and then use the words so that the words can be used with proper understanding.
